Regime has no time to break but to search legitimacy through its setting election in 2010, source close to the Burma top generals. There would be major operation for SPDC backs political parties and individuals who also wanted to compete in 2010 election.
However, legitimacy couldn't be created through election even it would be free and fair. If SPDC needs legitimacy, it would get hearts of the rest people or majority welcomes as a new government. Case is different, few research reports show that 80 percent of the general public still supporting NLD. Only few top business people stick with the regime currently but even they said they wanted to accept any government whether Daw Aung San Suu Kyi or else.
Unlike China and Vietnam, Burma generals did not have legitimacy at all because they came through coup. Besides, Chinese and Vietnamese Communist parties won the public approval through governance and done better situation for the people in both countries.
One researcher pointed that regime had lost one of the best opportunity in 20 years to get legitimacy and able to beat the NLD if SPDC ever rushed to help the Nargis victims. Another peoples' disapproval is killing and overreacting peaceful monk led demonstrating in Saffron Revolution in 2007.
People could accept SPDC if regime did allow the international offered in the early days. Instead, regime's refusal to save the people and ignored the peoples' suffering . This political ignorant made regime to earn only 5% of interviewees approved regime has done OK in Nargis and other issues.
What did go wrong? Regime not only refused to accept the international community help but refused to postpone the referendum. Regime may not ever rebuild legacy regardless of it has done few good things for the country and people.
One of the regime's senior leaders must have apologized for regime local authorities' brutality and insulting the religion in Pakhouku before widespread nationwide uprising. Instead, regime used predawn attack against the targeted monasteries and daylight attacking against the monks in Rangoon made the worst.
Even North Korean regime has some kind of legitimacy than senior general Than Shwe and group, report said. The generals may secure the election results as general Than Shwe wanted to see but they seemed to be dancing on the stage without cloths, said a researcher.
