Burma Update: Former spy chief and prime minister was asked to work again

Former PM and spy chief general Khin Nyunt was rumored to be freed last few weeks ago in Rangoon. Yet, unconfirmed source said he was seen by senior officials from Military Affairs Security and joint military operation few times to get suggestions regarding UWSA issue.



After United Wa State Army (UWSA) confronted with regional commander Brig-gen Kyaw Phyo and MAS chief Lt-general Ye Myint last week, general Thura Shwe Mann asked him to assist SPDC to deal with Wa, source said.

Former gen Khin Nyunt was sentenced to 44 years but he was later put to house arrest after army crackdown one of the most powerful military intelligence units and abolished the infamous MIS in the Burma military history in October 2004.



Just before the downfall of BSPP government to the late 1990s Khin Nyunt was considered to be a protégé of the former late general Ne Win. However, Burmese watchers predicted that Khin Nyunt was sooner or later to join the former first family's house arrest, jail terms and death sentences to the different member of the family.

He was an engineer of the junta signed cease-fire agreements with several rebel groups in the 1990s included UWSA in Burma's northern frontier, but failed to negotiate a deal with the largest armed group Karen National Union in terms of his arrest in 2004. He was known to be respected person from various ceasefire groups even after he was purged.
