View: A political Sightseeing is Over

BDD
Last week, UN special envoy's office was proud to say that tangible result would be brought back to New York City. Assumed that political handicap people from different political groups needed him, indeed it was true but different meaning. UN diplomat seemed that he is a savvier of Burma’s general failure in political, social and economical grounds. Yet, cyclone Nargis made Burma in deep trouble.

Many of diplomats from pro-SPDC countries was eager to see the UN Special Envoy’s working trip would get credit, and getting photo opportunity with Lady by all means, Rangoon base sources said. They need to show the world that UN is working properly and SPDC is willing to allow the UN negotiation mechanism until eve of the Election Day somewhere in 2010.

However, SPDC had setup the policy framework, timetable and meeting schedules for UN special envoy. He had no option of different political menu and time management. Just to follow the local NGO’s style meeting schedule, whether he likes or not.

His main objective was to meet with both top ends but regime briefed before he reached to the Rangoon airport; convincing NLD to accept the 2010 election. Regime reportedly dictated him that do not provide any promise of free and fair election would be, he was asked to tell the NLD seniors with ‘If’ SPDC provides a free and fair.

UN diplomat failed to recognize NLD seniors weren't born yesterday, his mission took six days without any progress, most of the meetings with A to Z SPDC cronies, sightseeing regime’s showcase cyclone relief efforts, shopping very cheap Burmese fine jewelries for love ones, and nice breakfast and authentic Burmese cosine during his stay.

Ironically, was sending UNDP staff and his associates with SB officials before the gate at the lady’s residence to persuade to meet. He tried to call her but she is never allowed using landline or mobile phone. His frustration mounted, he called New York several times but he was the man to do so, no alternative suggestion he got.

UN should have sent him with a clear message for both parties instead of asking NLD to endorse the SPDC’s one sided game plan. UN should bares the responsibility for failing mission.
