HUA HIN, Thailand, Oct. 25 (Xinhua) -- Sixteen leaders attending the 4th East Asia Summit held here Sunday agreed to encourage Myanmar to ensure a fair general election in 2010.
The East Asia Summit, also known as 10+6, was attended by leaders from the ten-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and their dialogue partners including Australia, China, India, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.
According to the Chairman's Statement issued after the meeting, the leaders "encouraged the Myanmar Government to ensure a free, fair and inclusive general election in 2010."
"We encouraged the Myanmar Government to ensure the implementation of the Seven-Step Roadmap to Democracy," said the Statement.
The Statement said the leaders would continue to support the on-going good offices of the United Nations Secretary-General in the democratization process in Myanmar.
