Myanmar vice president meets U.S. senator on ties, cooperation

NAY PYI TAW, June 1 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar Vice President U Tin Aung Myint Oo met with visiting U.S. Senator John McCain in Nay Pyi Taw Wednesday shortly after the latter arrived in the new capital on a two-day visit, according to a report of the Myanmar Radio and Television Wednesday night.

The two sides held discussions on enhancing bilateral relations and cooperation.

McCain also met with speakers of the two houses of the Union Parliament -- U Shwe Mann (House of Representatives) and U Khin Aung Myint (House of Nationalities) and Foreign Minister U Wunna Maung Lwin.

Moreover, he met with representatives from a number of political parties and ethnic minorities, the report said.

No further details about their meetings were disclosed by the report.

McCain will meet with Aung San Suu Kyi in Yangon on Thursday when he flys over to the former capital from Nay Pyi Taw, diplomatic sources said.

McCain's visit came after Joseph Yun, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asia and the Pacific, toured Myanmar last month.
