Thai-Burma border committee has met in Maywaddy, border town with Mae Sot from 27th to 29th report said. Burmese traders rumored that Friendship Bridge would be opened on 20th of June. During border closure, Thai businessmen have lost 2 million US dollar per day and Thai custom office lost 20 million baht from border trade every day.
Burmese regime closed the border in mid 2010 after Thai side had built a water-wall on Thai side and Burmese made a complaint and later Burmese authority closed the Friendship Bridge. In fact, Burmese military regime pressured DKBA, breakaway faction from KNU and DKBA must be transformed into Border Guard Force (BGF). One of the DKBA battalion led by major general Saw Labwe refused the conditions contributed to close the border.
Burmese military regime thought that closure the border trade made Thai businessmen to pressure the DKBA that also enjoys the revenue from the border trade. However, both Thai governments did not appear as pressure against the DKBA to pave the Thai businessmen to get normality. Thai local authorities doubt that Burmese generals will play more and more and Bangkok also considered a border closure as a local issue. Bur former PM Thaksin era, Thai authorities disturbed and pressured the Burmese pro-democracy and ethnic groups to keep border opening.
According to the Thai local authorities, Burmese counterparts accused the pro-democracy movement’s actions of instability activities and other terrorist activities were planned in Mae Sot, and urged Thai authorities to stop these activities. So far, Thai local authorities wouldn’t knock the doors of the pro-democracy movement offices.
Tak province and Mae Sot is a stronghold of current government and Democrat Party of Thailand.
