MANILA, July 19 (Xinhua) -- A senior U.S. State Department official will be in Manila for a two-day visit beginning Tuesday to meet with top officials of the Aquino administration, an official from the Department of Foreign Affairs disclosed on Monday.
The official said U.S. Undersecretary for Political Affairs William Burns is expected to meet with Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo and other senior Aquino administration officials, but he declined to say if Burns will call on President Aquino in Malacanang.
Security, human rights, economic, and political issues and other matters of bilateral concern between the Philippines and the U.S. such as the situation in the Korean Peninsula and the upcoming elections in Myanmar will be taken up during the meeting, he said.
The possibility of a U.S. state visit of President Aquino early next year may also be raised in the talks, the source added.
Burns, who is on the final leg of his four-nation Southeast Asian swing that included Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia, will arrive in the country Tuesday.
Burns' visit to these Southeast Asian partners, the U.S. State Department said earlier in a statement, is an "important element" of the Obama administration's commitment "to increased and deepened engagement with this dynamic region."
