Myanmar oks three new political parties for election

YANGON, April 23 (Xinhua) -- The Myanmar Union Election Commission Friday granted formation of three more new political parties for entering the coming multi-party general election, the date of which has not been set.

According to the state radio, the three parties are Pa-Oh National Organization, Taaung (Palaung) National Party and Wunthanu NLD (Union of Myanmar).

The first two new political parties granted on Thursday for formation are the 88 Generation Student Youths (Union of Myanmar) and the Union of Myanmar Federation of National Politics.

The grant has brought the total number of new political parties allowed for setting up so far to contest in the coming election to five.

One more old political party, the Lahu National Development Party, which has been in existence since 1990 general election, applied on Friday for continued existence, bringing the total of the old parties seeking continued legal status to four out of 10, the report said.

The report added that three more new parties also sought registration with the commission, bringing the total of newly- formed political parties seeking registration to 19.
