Breaking News: Panithan: “Military coup” a rumour

The news report saying that there would be a military coup before this Sunday, the day that the red-shirt people group will hold its “final battle” against the Democrat-led government, was just a rumour.

“The government has double-checked the news and found that it has no ground. Once an unusual situation takes place, there would be such a rumour”, acting government spokesman Panithan Wattanayakorn said on Thursday morning.

The rumour was widely spread especially when the people saw military troops moving out off their barracks to maintain peace and order under the Internal Security Act, Mr Panithan added.

The spokesman said only a small group of people would gain benefit from the coup, but the coup makers would face strong resistance from the people and the international community. Military coup will only cause more problems.

Maj Gen Ditthaporn sasasmith, spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc), said on Thursday morning that since early this morning the military have set up checkpoints in Bangkok and other 7 nearby provinces as it is the first day of the invocation of security law and the situation was normal.

More military troops will be deployed later today in the nearby provinces as they are routes leading into the capital of the red-shirts and thus the people should not panic over the reinforcement.

Maj Gen Ditthaporn insisted that the military will not take this opportunity to stage a coup as speculated.
