Unrelenting political movements of fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra are a major stumbling block to solving problems of the country, particularly the political mess that is the root cause of conflicts that have divided people in society.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva wrote in his new book entitled "The same old Abhisit - on the prime minister's seat" to be launched Thursday afternoon at the BookExpo Thailand 2009 being held at the Queen Sirikit National Covention Centre.
Mr Abhisit said in the book that because of this stumbling block the government has not been able to end the problems despite having been in office for ten months.
"Pol Lt-Col Thaksin is still active. His goal is to return to power. He has made efforts to exonerate himself from legal cases which have been decided. This means if Thaksin is determined to fight to achieve his goal changes must be made to various systems, and this could send a serious impact on Thai society," Mr Abhisit said in his book.
Mr Abhisit said if one day when he is not in this position he wants the people to remember him as a person who can bring the Thai politics back to normal and resolve political crisis. But, in order to be able to do this, he needs help from the people in society.
He said the Democrat Party still has a chance to clinch victory in the next election provided that it is able to solve the economic problems, reduce social conflict, and create state welfare for the people.
Mr Abhisit said he would still lead the Democrat Party in the next election, but does not think he would hold party leadership for as long as Chuan Leekpai did. In his opinion, a countdown for him has begun.
"I would like to say that our political resources have depleted more quickly than before. Politicians' work span has become shorter. Moreover, I can't imagine whether I would be able to remain in politics after ten years from now," he said.
Mr Abhisit said in his book he will continue to correct the political mess through the parliamentary system. He thinks constitutional amendment would be a starting point for reducing political conflicts and the amendment must be approved by the people through a referendum.
