YANGON, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar is anticipating the United States to cooperate in anti-drug drive for achieving greater success at this time when the U.S. is turning its policy positive towards the country, official media said on Sunday.

"If the U.S. recognizes Myanmar's genuine goodwill and efforts and cooperates with Myanmar, more tangible and greater success will be achieved soon," the New Light of Myanmar newspaper said in an article.

The article recalled that Myanmar has been constantly cooperating with the U.S. in survey on poppy farming and poppy output, reiterating that the country is also ready to cooperate with any country and organization in combating drug.

"Despite economic sanctions, the Myanmar government has been engaged in many projects in far-flung areas to persuade poppy farmers to quit the evil livelihood and alleviate poverty," the article said.

The article cited figures as saying that over the past 20 years from 1988 to 2008, the Myanmar government managed to reduce the poppy cultivated area by more than 324,000 hectares and put more than 243,000 hectares under perennial crops in the poppy farms, thanks to the 15-year drug elimination plan launched since 2000 on self-reliance basis.

The article also cited statistics verifying that in the eight months period from February to September this year, the government managed to seize over 10 million stimulant drug tablets, 819 kilograms heroin, 10 kg of ICE in Kentung and Tachilek alone in Shan state with a face price of over 39 billion kyats (35.4 million U.S. dollars).

Furthermore, up to Sept. 23, the government also confiscated over 10 million more stimulants, 1.3 tons of ephedrine and 3 tons of chemical powder among others in Laukkai, Shan state-north, with a street value of over 16 billion kyats (14.5 million dollars), the article added.
