Indonesia to hold presidential vote

Indonesians are set to go to the polls in the second direct presidential elections since the fall of the Suharto government in 1998.

Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the incumbent president, is hoping to win a majority in Wednesday's vote and avoid a run-off in September against either of the other two candidates - opposition leader Megawati Sukarnoputri or Jusuf Kalla, the vice president.

Megawati ruled for three years from 2001 to 2004 and her father was Indonesia's first president.

Kalla heads the Golkar party and has teamed up with General Wiranto, the former head of the country's armed forces during the Suharto era.
