A UN special envoy ended with poor hope after a two-day visit to Burma, sources close to regime noted. During the meeting with SPDC's foreign minister Nyan Win provided a letter to Ban Ki-moon. UN Special Envoy concluded his 8th visit to Burma had frustrated for preparing a trip by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Indeed, this trip was only fact finding and preparation but no agenda to meet with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, UN sources in Rangoon told the diplomats.
Foreign minister Nyan Win believed to deliver the letter of invitation to Secretary-General Ban ki-moon by Prime Minister Thein Sein. Letter’s saying the UN chief to assist smooth 2010 election that for the people of Burma. Burmese PM also seeks the UN to train the election workers but none of agenda expressed any sign of political negotiating, sources said.
Rangoon political observers said that UN Chief might be frustrated if letter was only invitation from PM Thein Sean and there has no grantee for UN chief to meet with Burma’s senior general and Daw Aung San Suu Kyi. Mr. Gambari is indeed to report UN chief of his observation and response from the military regime.
If the letter from PM Thein Sein had no intention of the national reconciliation, UN chief could only make a a request for reconciliation during his visit. UN Secretary General should have a concrete result and assurance from senior general Than Shwe to free Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
UN Chief has had decided to visit in terms of China and Russia encouraged him to avoid further pressure from outside of UN mechanism, an Asian diplomat from Rangoon speculated.
