UDD regathers in Sanam Luang

By: BangkokPost.com

The anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) leaders reassembled in Sanam Luang on Saturday, demanding the government to stop blocking the pro-UDD satellite-based DStation and community radio stations.

UDD key member Somyos Pruksakasem said the rally had no special agenda and there would be no phone-ins from politicians living abroad.

He also urged supporters of the group to wear clothes of any colour and not only red.

However, he called on the government to stop applying a double standard between his group and the yellow-clad People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) by lifting the arrest warrants for the UDD core members.

The government should stop intimidating the UDD leaders, he added.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Chavarat Charnvirakul said the government knew about the UDD's political activities, and was confident about the overall situation before it decided to lift the emergency decree in Bangkok and nearby provinces.

As a result from the lifting of the state of emergency, the UDD leaders were released on bail, he said.

The minister urged the red-clad protesters to avoid creating unrest in the country, and insisted the government never adopted a double standard between the two political groups.
