Politics: Burmese generals concerned and nervous about Thai political crisis

BDD

Burmese military council reportedly called the special meeting to monitor the development of Thai political crisis in Naypyidaw, source close to regime said. Current Thai government favors SPDC in terms of maintaining former Prime Minister Thaksin's Burma policy since 2000. Thaksin had increased the economic relations with SPDC as well as became a major defender of SPDC's human rights abuses and other political odds with domestic and international community. Now SPDC's close regional associate has faced changes within a matter of days.

A former PM and supporter of Thaksin, Samak Sundaravej also supported SPDC for exclusion of Daw Aung Suu Kyi in the political process few months ago. His remarks received heavily backfire from both Thai society and Burmese in exile. NLD spokesperson also rejected his remarks on Burmese language media.

Indeed, Burmese military regime has enjoyed full diplomatic and commercial support from Thailand time to time. However, PAD led anti-government groups' current severe pressures seemed Burmese generals best friends are not in the safety zone at all.

"Thailand, India and China are core regional partners for SPDC to defend the international pressure but Thai political crisis definitely harming the generals now", said a Burmese who normally meets with generals in special occasions. "India has been also stepping up its relations with regime in terms of various sectors, from regional security to trades and natural gas. But India may not side all the time with SPDC because of current regime's wild actions." he continued.

If Thai political landscape would change, China will be a center again and China would get more pressure from international community if regime keeps doing crazy suppressive measure.

Besides, international pressures, Thailand political results will also encourage Burmese political activists and frustrated citizens to challenge soon. This is a regional domino effect and Burma would face the same crisis after Philippines' People Power Movement in 1986 and Burma effected in 1988.
