News Hour: Daw Aung San Suu Kyi unlikely to meet the UN special envoy tomorrow

Sources close to regime said that Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was ill and unable to meet visiting UN special envoy Ibrahim Gambari. They sent a motorcade for her to meet with UN special envoy at 9:45 AM but she wasn’t able to attend the meeting with UN special envoy and motorcade left at her residence at 11:00 AM.

But Mr. Gambari met with five CEC members from NLD at 3:00 PM on 20th August. The meeting went tense, source said, but didn’t deliberate further.

Mr. Gambari was expecting to see her if she would be better and he said he prayed for her wellbeing, sources said.

Her illness is also setback for the regime’s fancy showcase of SPDC is willing to work with UN’s goodwill mission. If she meets with Mr. Gambari, there will be no progress but SPDC would gain a better propaganda mechanism since SPDC has no intention to improve the political situation and refused to negotiate with her, source said.

If UN fails to improve its role and SPDC’s unwillingness of political development, there will also be a major hurdle for the international community’s engagement policy.
