Mr. Piero Fassino, EU Special Envoy for Burma, will hold a press conference at the delegation of the European Commission in Bangkok, Thailand on 10 June 2008. After the trip he made to the region which led him to Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam and Thailand.
Reflection of EU countries had been very frustrated with the current SPDC regime on human rights issue and deadlock political situation with opposition leader Daw Aung Suu Kyi before Cyclone Nargis devastated lower Burma. And Nargis left more than 150,000 people died and missing, and more than two million became homeless.
EU was very upset with regime awake of post Nargis when junta denied aid workers entry and refusing assistance that might create more humanitarian crisis. EU was also very angry with SPDC limited United Nations relief supplies that were sent into help the people of Burma, forcing the UN to temporarily suspend relief efforts and further delaying much-needed help.
According close associate with European Parliament, regime may not have any excuse to say this is more decision needed in relief work while people are in grave danger.
“His press conference would cover both regime’s one sided referendum and post Nargis and EU stance, but we do not expect "la Responsabilité de Protéger" or R2P or any solid concrete resolution from him and China decision is a main source of different direction,” a Burmese journalist said.
